“Awareness of how our body is responding to the sounds we make is key in being able to change or enhance aspects of our sound.”

As singers, our instrument is largely internal and it can be hard to know how we are physically creating the sound. I have developed methods for singers to be able to feel what is happening when they sing and this is fundamental to my teaching approach. Awareness of how our body is responding to the sounds we make is key in being able to change or enhance aspects of our sound.

What to expect

I inspire confidence and assuredness in my clients: I begin with an appraisal – hearing the uniqueness in my clients voice and helping them to develop. Helping singers establish how their voice works and how to get their voices to do what they want them to do. We work to develop proven approaches to vocal technique in order to free the voice and prevent any sort of vocal strain or damage that can occur with vocal imbalances and take their vocal abilities further. The lessons are then tailored to your individual needs and goals as a singer.

Focus on performance

Each session starts with assessing your needs, finding out how you use your voice and we’ll discuss any issues you may be having. Lessons are song-based: I’ll show you some quick and fabulous ways into vocal technique and then I will have a listen to you sing something you’ve chosen before the lesson. Then we’ll have a chat about how you felt about your singing and I’ll give you tailored techniques specific to you and your material to practice so you can maintain and develop your voice.

From this session we can make a plan as to what you want to achieve from your time with me. My aim is to help you achieve your goals quickly and effectively.

Voice development for public speaking or jobs which require one to project their voice

You will learn to speak clearly with confidence, fullness, and power without suffering strain or fatigue.

Vocal injuries and vocal therapy

You will learn how to sing in a way that looks after your voice and helps to prevent injuries and vocal fatigue. I can also help you get back into shape after illnesses such as colds and laryngitis.

Your second pair of ears

I’m looking for what makes your sound unique, where your voice is at now and how you feel about your voice. I let you know what aspects of your singing I really enjoy. I am a second pair of ears so you can feel confident that what you’re doing sounds good to others. We can explore vocalising together so you can increase your vocal skills and make singing easy.

Writing your own songs

There’s many ways to sing a song. When you’re writing your own songs sometimes it’s hard to see the wood for the trees, especially when you’re collaborating with other musicians – sometimes your own singing voice becomes the last thing you thing about. I have ways to integrate your intentions for your songs with developing and maintaining amazing technique so you can perform night after night.

Find your zone

What’s different about me is that I place emphasis on building confidence: Making sure singers know what is good about their voice and gaining self-awareness on how their voice works: What internal (e.g. how we’re feeling) and external factors (e.g. the PA for that day’s gig isn’t sounding too great!) come into play that can affect how they perform on any given day.

My goal is to help singers “find their zone” for singing – knowing how their voice feels on any given day, a positive mindset. I help them maintain their zone during rehearsal and performance. Consequently, when nerves, an off-day, vocal health fluctuations and external factors happen, the singer remains confident and in their zone. I believe that self-awareness, combined with knowing your instrument, is key to being a good singer and maintaining a great-sounding, flexible voice.

Showbie Practice App

My clients get use of an iOS/web app where all notes about their singing progress are stored, plus videos and recordings of their lessons. Sheet music, lyrics and backing tracks are also accessible within the app.

Resource library

The app also has resources and links for singers to explore, for example, videos on how the diaphragm works.

There’s also vocal scales and other exercises for singers to practice.

Staying in touch in between lessons:

There is a discussion function – a bit like social media chatting, but just between me and the client. I can make quick recordings and post them in the app for any areas that are unclear in between lessons.
